The French defeat of 1940 had left the country split into two zones, one occupied, the other free. Refugees, especially Jews, were trying to flee and hide in the unoccupied zone. Roger felt impelled to leave for France, to be near poor. He knew he had to live and pray at the heart of the distress, for the birth of what he had intuition. I wanted to trade in some way to measure myself by myself: am I able to keep myself in the middle of one of the biggest events of the time.
